My alter-ego

"A woman must find her own voice."
- Maureen Murdock

If you were to meet me on the street, you would see one version of me. I would probably be wearing jeans and a fleece or a sweater or a t-shirt. I'd be dressed practically and sensibly and ordinarily. You might be able to see from the sparkle in my eyes or the book I was carrying that there was more to me. You might not.

What you wouldn't see is this crazy alter-ego that has begun asking for a voice. You wouldn't see the me that used to scoff at pink who is now looking at pretty floaty dresses on line. You wouldn't notice that I have a secret desire to own red sequined heels (or converse!) And you definitely wouldn't see that I sometimes debate buying rock chick t-shirts and biker boots.

Has anyone else found themselves growing up and growing sideways at the same time?

Shall we have an alter-ego party? I'll host.

Oh yes! But I have learned to go with the flow for change can be a good thing. :)

OMG, I was thinking of writing about similar changes that I've been seeing in myself and then to come here and read this was... in a way, quite the coincidence. Do host an alter-ego party, I imagine sequins, glitter and giggling. :)

oh absolutely. As I become more authentically myself, my style has started changing. I am slowly becoming more confident of that style and being able to express it. Buy those rocker chic shirts girl! You will feel so empowered wearing them.

Can I invite myself for the party too? I talk about my alter ego - but it would be fun to show them off.

I would love to come! I have to forewarn you though...my alter ego loves to wear floaty, feminine clothes, but then she tends to drink to much wine, tells filthy jokes, and is quite a potty mouth...but I'll try to keep her under control. :-)

Growing up and growing sideways...oh, that is so well put!

And, yes, please invite me to the party! :)

oh yes, i have a section in my closet that indulges my alter ego, she has frothy purple grape party dresses and motorcycle boots paired with silk sarongs and sequinced wraps ... :-) and like celeste she likes to drink copious amounts of wine and swear a whole lot even while she bats her sparkled eye shadowed eyes, tee hee

I think this is the norm with people. We have at least two faces we show the world.

Ooohh.... change is fun and a little scary. Own your style, don't let it own you...walk tall and be confident. My alter ego is a bohemian hippie with flowing layers of skirts ... boots or barefeet...rings and earrings... longer hair ... dancing, singing and playing guitar...sigh... O ... and she's slim... double sigh :)

Growing up and growing sideways is the most fabulous turn of phrase! I love it - and I think that maybe your alter-ego is sneaking out more and more because you are feeling more and more comfortable with your whole, wonderful self. Let her play - buy her some outfits and see where she takes you!

Oh there is so much of this in me too!! I dress to blend for the most part...low key. I'm a west coast girl for sure. But I dream of being the kind of woman who wears the most feminine dresses (in summer)and yes, pink! Me too! (I used to scoff at pink too...we are so much alike) ...is it possible to be a bit of both? To take the dreams out of the closet and coax them into becoming?
