The Long way Around

I'm in love with a song! Sometimes songs hit me really hard. I end up listening to them over and over, drinking them in. I feel the way about songs the way I feel about books. Both of them have the potential to make me feel less lonely or less weird.

I may be behind the times over here, but I am completely loving the Dixie Chicks' new song. Sometimes I wish I could have come out of high school and married the guy I was in love with and gotten an ordinary job and gotten on with the business of kids & dogs. I am not commenting on whether or not those choices are right or wrong. For some people, that path was the best one. For me it wasn't. Or at least I don't think it was. I followed a slightly different path, and I am still doing things differently.

So this is the song I am loving right now!

Taking the Long way 'Round
by The Dixie Chicks

My friends from high school
Married their high school boyfriends
Moved into houses
In the same ZIP codes where their parents lived

But I
I could never follow
No I
I could never follow

I hit the highway
In a pink RV with stars on the ceiling
Lived like a gypsy
Six strong hands on the steering wheel

I've been a long time gone now
Maybe someday, someday I'm gonna settle down
But I've always found my way somehow

By takin' the long way
Takin' the long way around
Takin' the long way
Takin' the long way around

I met the queen of whatever
Drank with the Irish and smoked with the hippies
Moved with the shakers
Wouldn't kiss all the asses that they told me to

No I
I could never follow
No I
I could never follow

It's been two long years now
Since the top of the world came crashing down
And I'm gettin' it back on the road now

But I'm takin' the long way
Takin' the long way around
I'm takin' the long way
Takin' the long way around

Oh, I just take my time I won't lay down
And take the long way 'round

Well, I fought with a stranger and I met myself
I opened my mouth and I heard myself
It can get pretty lonely when you show yourself
Guess I could have made it easier on myself

But I
I could never follow
No I
I could never follow

Well I never seem to do it like anybody else
Maybe someday, someday I'm gonna settle down
If you ever want to find me I can still be found

Takin' the long way
Takin' the long way around
Takin' the long way
Takin' the long way around

Oooohh, I love these lyrics...now I must find the song itself so I can feel it as well. I've been in quite my own music kick lately...each word, each melody pulling me into another world, another place, another time...my own "la la land"...and I'm loving it! I'd love any other recommendations from you on good songs:)
Love to you girly,
TD

I just got that CD last week and I'm loving it too! Besides the song you mentioned, one of my other favorite songs is "Not Ready to Make Nice." Ok--the song is a bit dark--but I just love the amount of PASSION and ENERGY in her voice. I've been singing along because it takes a lot of BREATHE...and if you sing loudly enough it feels soooo damn good!

I also love the lyrics and will be buying the CD thanks to you. I love what you wrote in your intro to them, about drinking in a song. I do the same thing (much to my husband's dismaay as I play the damn thing over and over again). I also like the theme of this song. Sometimes I wish I had taken a longer road (though I did get the hell out of my hometown. Thank God.) I just wish I had been carefree for longer. But I don't think that's really in my nature. Anyway... nice post! (and thanks for visiting my blog)
